Ten Colours for Spring, and I Don't Stock One of Them

The list came across my phone this week. Ten colours for spring and summer 2027, named at fashion week in New York. That's Pantone's forecast, and people build a whole season off it.

Eight of them are loud.

Princess Blue 19-4150. Waterfall 15-5516. Langoustino 16-1440. Chili Pepper 19-1557. Rosy Future 15-1910. Dragon Fire 16-1460. Daiquiri Green 12-0435. Hibiscus 18-1762.

Two of them are quiet. Anise Flower 12-0717 and Lavender Oil 15-3615.

I don't stock a single one

The hoodie comes in Black and Cream. The tee comes in Black and White. That's the whole shelf.

Heavyweight hoodie in Black
Hoodie — Black
Heavyweight hoodie in Cream
Hoodie — Cream
Heavyweight tee in Black
Tee — Black
Heavyweight tee in White
Tee — White

Four colours. Two pieces. Count 'em.

Not one of those ten is on it.

I'm telling you that up front so you don't read this as a hint. A brand my size posts a colour forecast and it reads like a teaser. This ain't one. Nothing on that list is coming.

What a colour costs me

I don't make nothing. I buy blanks and get 'em embroidered. So a new colour ain't a design decision for me. It's an order. I pick it, I pay for it before anybody's asked for it, and it sits in a box in my place until somebody reaches for it.

I buy in small runs. That's why a size sells out and stays out till the next order lands. Every colour I add splits that run — same money, spread thinner, across more boxes.

When a size runs out, the money for the next order is what brings it back. If I'd put that money into Dragon Fire instead, the size would still be out and I'd be sitting on a box of something nobody's asked me for once.

So when the forecast drops, the honest read on my end is that it's a next-year problem for people with a warehouse.

Why there's no swatches in here

You'll notice I gave you names and codes and no actual colours. That's on purpose. A colour on a screen ain't the colour on cloth, and a wrong Chili Pepper is worse than no Chili Pepper. The codes are real. Look 'em up.

The part I do pay attention to

Eight loud, two quiet. That split tells me more than any single colour on the list.

When a season goes loud, the piece somebody reaches for underneath it gets quieter. Black hoodie. White tee. Something that stays out the way while the shoe and the jacket do the talking.

That's the part I can use. Not the palette. The job the palette leaves open.

The hoodie is $85, black or cream. The tee is $48, black or white. Same price at every size on both.

My drawer ain’t changing for spring. Neither is the shelf.
